At their competition in February, Central State University Honda Campus All-Star Challenge (HCASC) team members put their knowledge to the test and qualified for the national HCASC Championship Tournament, the nation’s premier academic competition for Historically Black College and University (HBCU) students.

The qualifying teams will now head to Torrance, California, over the weekend of April 6-8 to compete for a chance to earn the HCASC National Championship title and a portion of the more than $500,000 in institutional grants provided by Honda.

CSU's team includes Derrick Wilson, a senior studying Industrial Technology; Nya Brunson, a senior studying Journalism and Digital Media; KeVonn Rayford, a senior studying Criminal Justice; and Lois Ofori, a senior studying Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing.

"Central State University has a long history of academic excellence, and this current group of students has had an exhilarating journey so far," said CSU's team coordinator, Sarah Armstrong-Jones, Ph.D., interim executive director of the Honors College and International Affairs. "HCASC has given them an opportunity to develop their intellectual curiosity and passion for knowledge through game play as well as make friends for life across many state boundaries. The experiences the students have will stay with them for the rest of their lives, and I'm proud to be a part of that. Now, as they say, let the games begin!"

The competition pits four-student teams against one another in a head-to-head battle, where they must quickly answer questions about history, science, literature, religion, math, the arts, pop culture, and sports. The competition aims to highlight the intellectual achievements of HBCU students and promote their success.

The tournament features teams from various HBCUs competing in a quiz-bowl style format, testing their knowledge in various subjects. The event not only provides a platform for students to showcase their academic skills but also offers networking opportunities and scholarships. Over the years, the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge has played a significant role in recognizing and supporting the educational pursuits of HBCU students.
