Crawford Family Foundation Launch Honors Scholar-Fellows Initiative at Central State
A Partnership for the Next Generation: Central State and the Dr. Curtis J. and Mrs. Gina Crawford Family Foundation Launch the Crawford Honors Scholar-Fellows Initiative
What does it take to prepare the next generation of leaders?
At Central State University, the answer is more than financial support. It is mentorship. Research. Leadership. Service. And the belief that exceptional students deserve exceptional opportunities to grow.
That vision is becoming a reality through the Crawford Honors Scholar-Fellows Initiative, a transformative partnership between Central State University and the Dr. Curtis J. and Mrs. Gina Crawford Family Foundation. Together, they are creating a signature Honors fellowship experience designed to empower talented students to become scholars, innovators, researchers, and servant leaders prepared to make a lasting impact on their professions, their communities, and the world.
Beginning with its inaugural cohort, the Crawford Honors Scholar-Fellows Initiative will provide an immersive Honors experience that extends well beyond the classroom. Students will engage in faculty-guided research, leadership development, professional mentoring, community engagement, and other high-impact learning experiences that prepare them for graduate study, careers, and lives of purpose.
"Great universities are defined not only by the degrees they confer, but by the leaders they cultivate. This vision allows Central State to create an experience that will challenge our most talented students to think boldly, serve generously, and lead courageously. This initiative is an investment not simply in financial support, but in developing the next generation of leaders.” — Dr. Morakinyo A. O. Kuti, President
The initiative reflects a shared vision between the University and the Foundation: to ensure talented students have access to the opportunities, mentorship, and experiences that transform potential into lifelong leadership.
"Our family believes talent exists everywhere, but opportunity does not always follow. Through the Crawford Honors Scholar-Fellows Initiative, we hope to inspire students to pursue excellence, embrace servant leadership, and use their talents to improve their communities and the lives of others. We are honored to partner with Central State University to help shape the next generation of leaders." —
Crystal J. Crawford-Parker, President and Executive Director, Dr. Curtis J. and Mrs. Gina Crawford Family Foundation
As the Honors College prepares for the inaugural cohort, faculty and staff are developing every aspect of the student experience, from recruitment and selection to faculty mentorship, research opportunities, leadership programming, and community engagement. The goal is to create an experience that challenges students academically while preparing them to lead with confidence, integrity, and purpose.
"The Crawford Honors Scholar-Fellows Initiative is about more than preparing students for their first job. It is about preparing them for a lifetime of leadership. We are building an experience that will challenge students academically, encourage them to think boldly, and inspire them to use their talents in service to others." — Dr. Thomas Spencer, Dean of the Honors College
The Crawford Honors Scholar-Fellows Initiative reflects Central State University's commitment to advancing academic excellence through innovation, strategic partnerships, and investments that create lasting opportunities for students. It is one example of the momentum building across the University as philanthropy and academic vision come together to expand opportunities for students. By aligning generous philanthropy with the University's long-term priorities, Central State is creating transformational experiences that strengthen student success today while shaping the University's future.
"The most meaningful philanthropy doesn't simply fund programs, it creates opportunities that change lives. This vision challenged us to think beyond traditional scholarship funding and imagine a comprehensive fellowship experience that will develop leaders for generations to come. This initiative is a wonderful example of what is possible when philanthropic partners and the University work together to create something truly transformational." — Rebecca Kocher, Vice President for Institutional Advancement and Executive Director of the Central State University Innovation and Development Foundation
