Honoring freedom and heritage: The significance of Juneteenth at Central State University

At Central State University, we proudly observe Juneteenth as a powerful reminder of the remarkable resilience and unwavering hope of the African American community. As Ohio’s only public Historically Black College or University (HBCU) and 1890 Land-Grant Institution, we honor this historic moment not only as a milestone in American history but as a reflection of the mission we live every day — uplifting generations through education, leadership, and cultural pride.
What is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth, celebrated annually on June 19, commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, finally received word of their freedom — more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. It is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States, and its significance was further recognized in 2021 when it was formally declared a federal holiday.
The name “Juneteenth” blends “June” and “nineteenth,” symbolizing not only the delayed promise of freedom but also the enduring strength and indomitable spirit of African American communities, a source of immense pride and inspiration for us all.
Rooted in history, driven by purpose
At Central State University, Juneteenth is much more than a date on the calendar — it is a powerful call to action for continued growth, empowerment, and unity. As an Institution founded in 1887 to serve freedmen and their families, our legacy is deeply connected to the same values of justice and access that Juneteenth represents.
This day reminds us why our work matters. It reaffirms our commitment to academic excellence, leadership development, and community engagement. It inspires us to prepare students — particularly those from underserved communities — to thrive in a global society equipped with knowledge, confidence, and a sense of purpose.
Celebrating culture, advancing knowledge
Juneteenth is an opportunity to educate, engage, and celebrate. Across campus and within the broader community, we recognize the holiday through storytelling, art, music, scholarship, and dialogue that honors African American history and culture.
For Central State students, faculty, staff, and alums, Juneteenth reinforces a profound connection to legacy. It is a moment to celebrate how far we’ve come — and to look ahead with purpose as we continue to lead with excellence, service, and pride.
Moving forward, together
Juneteenth reminds us that freedom is a living ideal that must be nurtured and protected. At Central State University, we remain steadfast in our mission to educate and elevate. We honor those who came before us by forging pathways for those who follow.
As we observe Juneteenth, we celebrate our shared heritage and the promise of a more equitable future. Together, we rise.
