Cheers, tears, and echoes of proud footsteps marked a day of celebration at Central State University as more than 600 graduates crossed the stage at the 2025 Commencement Ceremony, held on the campus grounds in Wilberforce, Ohio. The time-honored tradition recognized the culmination of years of academic dedication, community impact, and personal perseverance.

Presiding over his first commencement as President, Dr. Morakinyo A.O. Kuti '85 — an alumnus and the University’s 10th president — set the tone of the day with a warm welcome to families, alumni, and distinguished guests.

“Commencement marks a day of milestone in your lives,” Kuti told the graduates.

“This is a joyful day for all of us, and especially meaningful for the families and loved ones who supported you.”

Among those honored were members of the Class of 1975, celebrating their 50th anniversary, returning to their alma mater as “Golden Centralians.” Their presence stood as a powerful testament to the University’s enduring legacy.

Central State recognized Tristin A. Fernandes as the Top Scholar for maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA while double majoring in computer science and mathematics. A native of Wilberforce, Fernandes will continue his studies in applied mathematics at the Air Force Institute of Technology this fall.

Dozens of graduates were also recognized with honors distinctions, including Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, and Cum Laude. Each name was announced with reverence and pride by longtime CSU voices Dr. Lovette Chinwah-Adegbola, Professor Emeritus of Communications, and Charles Fox, General Manager, WCSU FM.

Student voices lead the way

Mer’Kyah Warren, acting president of the Student Government Association and a criminal justice major from Toledo, delivered greetings on behalf of the student body.

“We did it. We pushed through every challenge and came out stronger.”  — Mer'Kyah Warren

Delivering the keynote address was Dr. Myron L. Rolle, a Harvard-trained pediatric neurosurgeon, Rhodes Scholar, and former NFL player. Drawing from his multifaceted journey and personal philosophy, Rolle encouraged graduates to adopt “The 2% Way” — a mindset of small, consistent improvements.

“Don’t try to compare your path to others,” he said. “Run your race, stay in your lane, and do what God has purposed you to do.”

Through stories from his own setbacks and triumphs, Rolle offered four guiding principles: focus on your school, support, service, and spirit. His words brought the audience to applause and reflection.

Into the future

The event concluded with the conferral of degrees by President Kuti, the symbolic tassel turn, and induction into the Central State University National Alumni Association, led by Anthony E. Gardner ’92. The Rev. Kima Cunningham offered the benediction.

With the ceremony complete, graduates departed to the rousing chords of “Pomp and Circumstance,” ready to begin their next chapter. As President Kuti reminded them:

“The world needs your talents, leadership, and vision to make it a better place. Carry the Marauder spirit with you — always.”
