Construction Underway
Construction has begun on a new, $40 million facility to serve as home for Central State University's Land-Grant research. The two-level, 40,000-square-foot will include, among other features, a "precision" lab for both sustainable agricultural and robotic research; a food safety lab; a molecular biology and tissue culture lab; and a soil and water testing research lab. Completion of the first phase of the construction project is expected by June 2024, with Phase 2 anticipated to be completed in early 2025.

"I'm really excited about the construction that is happening across (state Route) 42. We will be getting a new research facility," said Sakthi Kumaran Subburayalu, Ph.D., interim associate director of Land-Grant research. "It will house several laboratories and offices for research faculty and staff."

Research Notes
CSU is currently working with USDA scientists and partners from other 1890 Land-Grant institutions on a USDA "Community Building Grant" to investigate naturally occurring genotypes of sweet potato as candidates better suited for northern climates. The research includes field testing at CSU and partner sites and experiments to develop AI for automatic recognition. Trials will give results for the selection of varieties that perform better in Ohio's climate and reduce production risks.

Rajveer Dhillon, Ph.D., assistant research professor, to the right in the next picture with his undergraduate student researcher Isaiah Walkine. Dr. Dhillon worked on this project for collecting aerial images using a drone mounted with a camera. Several data collection events were organized during the growing season to capture images at different growth stages of sweet potatoes.
