Environmental engineers apply the principles of engineering in practice using their knowledge in basic sciences and mathematics and socio-economics to develop solutions to environmental problems. Environmental engineering involves engineering better environments with preservation, prevention, control, remediation, and restoration of the earth. It helps to transform abandoned regions into thriving economic centers and convert waste into renewable energy. Environmental engineering program in the College of Engineering, Science, Technology, and Agriculture (CESTA) can provide education and training to a passionate individual to become an environmental engineer.

Environmental engineering is a growing field poised to grow tremendously in the future. In 2019, US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported environmental engineering with a median annual salary of $88,860 and with a low unemployment rate of 0.2%. It also projects that the employment of environmental engineers to grow 5 percent from 2018 to 2028. CSU's program is designed to address the various needs and demands of the environmental engineering industry by emphasizing the fundamentals. A summer internship is a requirement of the program, and typically, the department, in collaboration with the Office of Career Services, assists students in identifying paid internships during summer.

Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Environmental Engineering

The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree program in Environmental Engineering is dedicated to undergraduate environmental engineering education and accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET), https://www.abet.org.

The program requires learning mathematics (including advanced courses in differential equations and multivariate calculus), physics, chemistry, basic geology, and microbiology in the early years of study to prepare for advanced courses during a student's junior and senior years. The basic engineering science component of the curriculum is offered through the Manufacturing Engineering Department (MFE) and in the home department, Department of Water Resources Management (DoWRM). The ENE curriculum at DoWRM is unique with courses in fluid mechanics, surface and groundwater hydrology, water treatment, wastewater treatment, air quality engineering, and solid and hazardous waste management, water and environmental law, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and in many other related aspects of environmental engineering. Environmental Engineering Program Vision Statement

The Environmental Engineering Program is offered by the Department of Water Resources Management. The program seeks to become a leader in undergraduate environmental engineering education by providing educational services that meet and exceed the expectations of our stakeholders: current students; alumni; employers; graduate schools; Department of Water Resources Management faculty and staff. The program creates value for our students through providing nurturing and caring learning environments, effective instruction using culturally relevant pedagogy, technological infusion, efficient operation, shared values, and responsiveness. The vision supports motivated and passionate students, who embrace the University tenets "Service, Protocol, and Civility" and engage in experiential learning and problem solving under the direction of competent, dedicated, and productive faculty, administrators, and staff.

Environmental Engineering Program Mission Statement

The program's overarching mission is to prepare leaders in engineering and related technical fields who specialize in environmental systems. Students understand how to apply engineering knowledge, technical skills, and a scientific disposition to solve environmental problems and develop sustainable resources to promote the health and wellness of global societies, emphasizing access to underserved communities and promoting diversity in the technical fields. The program offers opportunities for students to gain additional knowledge in related areas such as policy, economics, social and legal aspects of environmental issues. The program specializes in applying geotechnical, geospatial, and sensor technologies in tackling emerging environmental problems.

The Environmental Engineering (ENE) program within the Department of Water Resources Management at Central State University is dedicated to preparing students, particularly underserved students, for careers in environmental engineering. The program identified three specific educational objectives to address the local, state, and national opportunities and needs. The ENE program expects the graduates within a few years of graduation to attain the following:

1. Be employed as practicing engineers in environmental engineering or related fields and become valuable employees

2. Develop professionally through the attainment of licensure or by pursuing advanced studies in engineering research or engineering management;

3. Attain progressive leadership positions in engineering or related professional field

Specific goals of the program (Adopted AY 2020-2021)
  • 1. To impart knowledge of engineering project management involving planning, allocating, designing, building, operating, and optimally managing environmental systems essential for human health and biodiversity;
  • 2. To train students on the preservation of natural environments or landscapes and abatement and control of pollution of disturbed ecosystems comprising of air, water, and land in residential, industrial, agricultural, municipal, and regional environments;
  • 3. To provide knowledge of sustainable food and energy development and energy recovery from food and municipal waste;
  • 4. To update the engineering curriculum with current and emerging practices in the environmental field;
  • 5. To solve environmental problems using processes and systems at localized and distributed scales;
  • 6. To provide knowledge of the local government structure for the successful implementation of environmental projects in the communities;
  • 7. To provide hands-on training to the students through providing opportunities in research and practicum;
  • 8. To train students on professionalism, life-long learning, and adherence to engineering code, ethics, and responsibilities;
  • 9. To make a positive impact on the environment, public health, and wellness of local communities and the global society

The Environmental Engineering (ENE) program provides quality education to a diverse student population, particularly those from the underserved communities, will empower them to develop their full potential as engineers, leaders, and citizens of a global society. The program requires students to undergo practicum in the environmental field to learn to contribute to the employer's profitability, develop a consistent culture of working towards the growth of the organization and its development goals.

Student Outcomes

Student Outcomes "1-7" (SO "1-7") [Since Spring 2018]

In 2018, ABET updated the student outcomes for program assessment to ABET SO "1-7". ENE program at CSU adopted the newly published ABET student outcomes as its student outcomes (SO "1-7") and started to assess its courses according to the new set of criteria in Fall 2018. The Student Outcomes 1 – 7 are listed below:

  • 1. An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics
  • 2. An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public multiple factors
  • 3. An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
  • 4. An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts
  • 5. An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives
  • 6. An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions
  • 7. An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies

Careers in Environmental Engineering

The environmental engineering program prepares students to become planning/ design/ construction engineers in consulting firms, State and Federal agencies, and city governments, system operational professionals in drinking water, wastewater, air quality, and solid waste management functions in cities. Upon joining a firm or an agency, the graduates are expected to have advancing careers culminating in visible managerial positions. Environmental Engineering is ideal for students with a strong sense of concern for a healthy environment across various sections of the populace nationally and internationally.

Financial Aid

Central State University offers a variety of financial aid packages and scholarships. Current students and incoming freshmen in CESTA qualify for the USDA-NIFA scholarships. DoWRM offers scholarships for its majors up to $ 7,500 per year (or $ 10,000 if out-of-state) to qualified incoming freshmen through a grant funded by the National Science Foundation through its S-STEM program (USE4WRM). The college is also proud of offering assistance through the National Science Foundation's Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Programs. Besides, students are supported through sponsored research that the DoWRM faculty brings in.

Our Campus

The campus is situated in the Miami valley region in Wilberforce, 4 miles Northeast of Xenia, Ohio and 18 miles east of Dayton, Ohio on the scenic Highway 42. Tawawa woods, a natural reserve serves as a beautiful backdrop to the campus. Massies creek, a major tributary to the Little Miami River, Ohio nestles through the woods and serves as the outdoor learning laboratory and a field station for our students. The university’s water treatment plant provides a unique opportunity for our students to gain practical experience on water treatment and distribution. The campus is located in the middle of sprawling and beautiful golden green cornfields of southwestern Ohio however it is 18 miles to Dayton, Ohio’s sixth largest city and within 55 miles to major metropolitan cities Cincinnati, Dayton and Columbus. The campus is close to one of the nation's finest bike path networks http://miamivalleytrails.org. Our students enjoy strong support from the CSU alumni association and its successful and dedicated members who are spread across the entire United States.

Students either commute or live in the residence halls on campus. Students may choose to participate in extracurricular activities such as varsity and intramural sports, student government, student professional societies, fraternities and sororities, and Army ROTC. Environmental Engineering majors can become student members of national professional societies such as the National Society for Black Engineers, and the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists.
