  Summer Camps at CSU

W.E.B. Dubois Talented Tenth STEM Education Academies I, II & III will be held June 8 through June 27, by special invite only, as part of the Governor’s Closing the Achievement Gap initiative. For more information, contact Phil Coates at (937) 376-6374 or pcoates@centralstate.edu.

ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp will be held June 15 through June 27 in the Center for Education and Natural Sciences on the CSU campus. The BHSSC is a two-week academic, residential camp for students going into 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. Its emphasis is on increasing students’ mathematics/science skills, introducing them to college life, and stimulating their interest in science and engineering as a potential career path. Each day, campers will attend classes that include problem solving, study, research, writing and communication skills, incorporated with biology, chemistry, physics, design concepts, and field excursions. Applications are currently being accepted for admission to the free camp. The Computer Science Summer Bridge Program will be held from June 22 through July 18 for incoming college freshmen who are either U.S. citizens or permanent residents, have an ACT score of 20 or better and a 3.0 GPA or above, and provide a letter of recommendation. The program features field trips and classes on application topics such as: computer graphics, MATLAB , C++ programming , college algebra, biological sciences, and engineering. Tuition, room and board charges, supplies, and field trips for the four-week academic program will be completely free for the selected participants. Summer Transportation Institute 2008 will be held at Central State University June 22 through July 18. It is for high school students entering the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades who have completed or are qualified to enroll in pre-algebra. Students must have a minimum 2.5 GPA and submit two letters of recommendation, an essay, and who provide a transcript. The purpose of the Institute is to create awareness and stimulate interest among high school students in taking advantage of opportunities that exist in the transportation industry. The curriculum will expose students to new frontiers and adventures such as highway design, transportation of people and cargo, intermodalism, laws, regulations, safety, and career opportunities. Students will participate in SAT preparation courses, computer training, academic enhancement activities, field trips, and related projects. Applications must be mailed by May 9 to Gorgui Ndao, Project Director, Summer Transportation Institute Center for Student Opportunities, Central State University. W.E.B. Dubois Talented Tenth STEM Education Academy IV will be held July 6 through July 18 in the Center for Education and Natural Sciences. The academy is for high school students (minimum age 14 years old). The cost for the camp is $100. For more information, contact Phil Coates at (937) 376- 6374 or pcoates@centralstate.edu.

Central State University’s Upward Bound Program is a pre-college program of robust academic instruction, career exploration, tutoring, and counseling for 9th and 10th grade students who have a 2.5 GPA or less, and are considered low-income and/or first-generation college students. Sports Camps

11th Annual Central State University Men’s Basketball Camp will be held June 16 through June 19, from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in Beacom/Lewis Gym. The camp is for boys 8-18 years old. The cost of the camp is $95 per person. The purpose of the camp is to provide an opportunity for campers to learn a variety of fundamentals through instruction, practice and drills, under the supervision of CSU coaching staff. The 2008 Central State University Boy’s Football Camp, for boys age 11-15, will be held June 22 through June 25. Check-in begins at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 22. The camp encompasses three overnight stays with six practices. The cost of the camp is $150 per person. The purpose of the camp is to provide participants the opportunity to develop discipline and character, to strengthen inner qualities and to grow as a total athlete. The camp will emphasize the importance of preparing physically, mentally and spiritually for the sport of football and for life. Also, the camp will provide participants the opportunity to learn and improve their football knowledge and skills. Under the guidance of experienced football coaches, each participant will come away with a better understanding of the game of football. The camp is designed to meet each player’s needs at a particular position, while learning important techniques and fundamentals that are basic to football. Central State University Women’s Basketball Camp will be held June 23 through June 26 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Beacom/Lewis Gym for girls 8-18 years old. The camp cost varies: $75 if paid before June 6; $90 if paid after June 6; $75 each for a team of at least 10 members; $120 for a 2 family discount or $140 for a 3 family discount. The purpose of the camp is to provide an opportunity for campers to learn a variety of fundamentals through practice and drills with CSU coaching staff. Campers will gain valuable experience through individual instruction on offense and defense, and by playing against other athletes in the afternoon session 5 on 5  games.
