Central State University to host summer science camp featuring first African American astronaut to walk in space

Central State University has been selected by the ExxonMobil Foundation to host one of the annual ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camps (BHSSC) on June 15 to June 27, 2008. The camp, provided by an $80,000 grant to Central State University, enables middle school students to learn about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. (STEM subjects)

"We are excited to be one of the five new campuses added to those that have previously run a camp in the STEM areas," said Dr. Kaye Jeter, director of the Institute of Urban Education at Central State University.

The BHSSC is a two-week academic, residential camp that emphasizes increasing students' mathematics/science skills, introducing them to college life, and stimulating their interest in science and engineering as a potential career path. Each day, campers will attend classes that include problem solving, study, research, writing and communication skills incorporated with biology, chemistry, physics, design concepts, and field excursions.

"Through our partnership with ExxonMobil and the dedication of the U.S. colleges and universities, we are able to once again expand these meaningful summer programs that address the inquisitive nature of middle school students," said Dr. Bernard Harris, the first African-American to conduct a space walk and a veteran of two space shuttle missions.

The former astronaut will be on hand at Central State University for at least one day during the summer science camp. Harris said students, who are academically qualified, genuinely interested in math and science and recommended by their teacher, could be rewarded with the opportunity to attend these fun and educational camps.

The BHSSC camp at Central State University is open to any qualified rising 6th, 7th and 8th grade student in the Dayton, Cincinnati and Columbus region. Applications are currently being accepted for admission to the free camp.
