Lady Marauders Take 3rd In National Independent Tournament

The Lady Marauders triumphed 75-47 over Chowan University behind 15 points by Senior Guard Mahogany Wilson and took home the third place trophy in the /Division II Women’s National Independent Tournament in Washington, DC.

The Lady Marauders finished the season 14-13 and just missed making it to the championship game on Sunday night when they dropped a 51-50 decision to the University of the District of Columbia (who won the tournament with a victory over the University of Puerto Rico—Bayamon). The major difference in the performance of the Central State team between Sunday and Tuesday was the way they took care of the ball. On Sunday CSU turned the ball over 35 times and in winning on Tuesday they had only 11 turnovers.

Joining Wilson, the only senior on Coach Patricia Tramble’s team, with 15 points was freshman Brooklyn Morrow and junior Ije Ofomota both also with 15 points. Junior Natasha Galloway added ten points.

The Lady Marauders controlled the boards 46 to 34 and shot 42 percent for the game to Chowan’s 36 percent. CSU hit 74 percent at the free throw line to Chowan’s 52 percent.

CSU’s bench provided 32 points to their opponents 3 bench points and had 12 fast break points but allowed Chowan no opportunities to score fast break points. /This in part by their taking care of the basketball and only turning it over 11 times, three of the turnovers were on offensive fouls.

The Lady Marauder’s season is now completed and with this core of 11 players returning the Lady Marauders have a good reason to look forward to the 2008-09 season, their first season as a full member of the NCAA.
