Lady Marauders Down Concord University 85-75
By
How do you overcome a ten point half time deficit when you are shooting 38 percent from the field and 37 percent from the foul line and your opponent is shooting 64 percent from the field and although they are only shooting 50 percent from the foul line it is still better than you?
Turn up the defense and force your opponent into 19 second half turnovers, shoot 85 percent from the foul line and harass them when they don’t turn the ball over to having only ten seconds left on the shot clock when they finally get the ball down the court.
That is what the Lady Marauders did to overcome Concord University on Tuesday night before a very sparse crowd of about two hundred fans who were still around as Central State began their Thanksgiving break.
Concord jumped out to a thirteen point lead with less than seven minutes gone in the game and they were shooting over 65 percent from the field and it looked like it was going to be a long night for Coach Pat Tramble’s team.
CSU started a full court press and this helped lead to 14 first half turnovers to only 6 committed by the Lady Marauders. CSU cut the lead to two at 32-30 before the Lady Lions went on a ten-2 run to build their lead back to ten at half time.
Central State continued the pressure in the second half and on a layup at the 8:20 mark they took the lead for the first time at56-55. The two teams went back and forth but the Lady Marauders made their free throws and gradually took control of the game. CSU was lead in scoring by Natasha Galloway with 22 points, with Shayla Henderson adding 16 and Evin Wimberly and Brooklyn Morrow each contributing 14. Wimberly had a four point play the old fashion way when on a fast break following a Concord turnover she was about tackled as she made her layup and the officials called an intentional foul. So with the basket and two free throws converted she scored four points on the play. This occurred with 3:19 remaining in the game and CSU leading by 70 to 68 and allowed them to stretch their lead to six points.
Central State turned a total of 33 turnovers by Concord into 36 points and had 6 points off of fast breaks to none by Concord. Additionally 48 of CSU’s points came in the paint which helped take them to the foul line 29 times in the game on 26 personal fouls by Concord while CSU committed only 16 fouls which lead to 13 free throws for Concord.
After a three day Thanksgiving break the Lady Marauders will come back and play neighboring Cedarville University on Tuesday December 1, 2008.
