The Institute for Urban Education Convenes Culturally Competent Discovery Training (CCDT) Planning Meeting
Nationally Prominent Education Scholars Come to Central State to Address the Achievement Gap for African American Males
The Institute of Urban Education at Central State University has been awarded a two year grant by the Governor's Closing the Achievement Gap office. The Institute has convened a meeting of nationally renowned education scholar-practitioners (with specialties and experience that include teaching African American males) to design culturally competent program standards, a program curriculum, conduct research, and provide professional development training and assessment for teachers in thirteen districts in the state.
The CCDT Planning Meeting will take place March 18-20th, 2008 at the Institute of Urban Education. Program managers from the Governor's Closing the Achievement Gap office, including the Honorable C.J. Prentiss, along with the scholars will design a professional development curriculum and program for one hundred teachers. The teachers will be trained to become school site professional development planners for teachers at their particular schools.
The Governor's Closing the Achievement Gap Initiative addresses the low graduation rates of students in urban settings by providing professional development training to teachers. The population most affected by low graduation rates is African American males. The Governor's Closing the Achievement Gap office has focused on the needs for improvement with this population first.
Scholar-practitioners who will attend the planning meeting are: Dr. Andrew Griffin, Dr. Raymond Hart, Dr. Kevin Johnson, Dr. Earl Holliday, Dr. E. Timothy Moore, Mrs. Patricia Payne, and Dr. Charles Willie. Several members of the Governor's Closing the Achievement Gap office will also be in attendance, including Hon. C.J. Prentiss, Lois Jones, Richard Lopez, Bob Ivory, Troy Ogle, Nelson Ramirez, and Granville Waiters. Central State University's College of Education Dean, Dr. Robert Moore, and several Central State professors will attend the planning meeting and be involved in evaluating the implemented program at a later stage of the project: Dr. Mattie Grooms, Dr. Rascheel Hastings, Dr. Kimberly Hitchcock, Dr. Anita Perymon, Dr. Frank Schiraldi, Dr. Joshua Searcy, Dr. James Stone, and Dr. Rajeev Swami. Dr. Timothy Heaton of Cedarville University will also serve as a program evaluator for the professional development stage of the CCDT project.
