Conference History The Institute of Urban Education provides professional development for teachers and other school staff as an integral part of its mission to transform urban education strategy and practice. Since its inception in 2000 at Central State University, the Institute has delivered research, training, instructional and technical assistance support for current and pre-service teachers and administrators who serve urban school districts, their students, and families across Ohio. The Institute plays a vital role in helping to equip educators with cultural competency awareness, skills and methods of instruction In collaboration with The Governor’s Initiative for Increasing the Graduation Rate, our professional development activities support teachers, administrators and staff in using culturally targeted strategies to improve the achievement of African American males placed at risk educationally. This conference is second in a series of three for the 2008-2009 year.
