Second in a Series: The Institute for Urban Education Prepares for Culturally Competent Professional Development Training (CCPDT) to be held on campus of Central State University September 24 and 25, 2008. This year's keynote speaker will be Pedro Noguera, PhD.

Renowned scholar and author, Pedro Noguera, PhD, will deliver a keynote address at the Cultural Competence Professional Development Training Conference presented by the Institute of Urban Education on September 24th and 25th, 2008. Dr. Noguera's address "Reclaiming the Promise of Public Education" will take place September 24th at 9 am in Robeson Auditorium on Central State's campus.

Pedro Noguera is one of America's most important voices for healthy public education. An urban sociologist, Noguera's focus is on schools influenced by social and economic conditions in urban environments. An expert on school reform, diversity, and the achievement gap, he is a currently a professor at the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development at New York University. He is also a part-time high school teacher, the author of several groundbreaking texts, a regular guest on CNN, and a dynamic speaker who translates social theory into concise, hip language with emotional impact and intellectual rigor.
He is also the Executive Director of the Metropolitan Center for Urban Education and co-directs the Institute for the study of Globalization and Education in Metropolitan Settings (IGEMS). Among his groundbreaking texts are: City Schools and the American Dream: Reclaiming The Promise of Public Education and Unfinished Business: Closing the Racial Achievement Gap in Our Schools. His latest book is entitled "The Trouble with Black Boys."

former adjunct professor at the University of Illinois-Chicago, the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University. He founded and directed George Washington University's Forum for Sport and Event Management and Marketing. he founded AAD Education, Health and Sports (formerly, Athletes Against Drugs), a nonprofit youth outreach organization with over 500 professional athletes and other civic leaders. Graham is actively involved in leadership efforts and programs in South Africa and is Founder of Concerned Citizens of Whitesboro, NJ, and Concerned Citizens of Lake Waccamaw, NC. He serves on several boards, such as the national board of Junior Achievement (JA) and the 7-Eleven Education Is Freedom Foundation, and is a member of the Economic Club of Chicago. He holds a bachelor's degree in Social Work from Hardin-Simmons University. He received a master's degree in Education from Ball State University and an honorary doctorate in Humanities from Coker College, where he is also a distinguished visiting professor.
