The Institute of Urban Education at Central State University will present the second conference in the Cultural Competence Professional Development Training for Teachers (CCPDT) series. The conference will take place on Central State University's campus on September 24th and 25th.
The Institute has been awarded a two year grant by the Governor's Closing the Achievement Gap office to design culturally competent program standards, program curriculum, conduct research, and provide professional development training and assessment for teachers in thirteen districts in the state. The Governor's Closing the Achievement Gap Initiative addresses the low graduation rates of students in urban settings. Highlights of the conference include keynote addresses and presentations by Dr. Pedro Noguera, Dr. Eleanor "Renee" Rodriguez, Dr. Wade Boykin and Stedman Graham.

At the conference the Institute of Urban Education will deliver a professional development curriculum and program for over one hundred teachers, administrators, union representatives and key staff who teach and work with ninth grade African American males who are educationally at risk. In addition to breakthrough practices, the conference focus will be on establishing an understanding of the cultural contexts that shape African American ninth grade boys, and the use of that knowledge to teach, advance the learning and achievement of these young men.
The Cultural Competence Professional Development segment of the Governor's Initiative on Closing the Achievement Gap is designed for a select group of teachers who become school site cultural competence professional development planners and advocates for their particular schools. Teachers will be assisted in their own schools and classrooms by Teacher Facilitators, faculty members from Central State, Kent State and Cedarville Universities and Kennesaw State University in Georgia.
Areas of coverage for the conference will span classroom management strategies, reclaiming the promise of public education, the socio emotional needs of ninth grade boys, our responsibilities in teaching African American males, leadership strategies for teachers and principals, recognizing and embracing cultural practices to support learning, promoting high achievement for African American males and strategies for closing the achievement gap.
Additional noted presenters at the conference will include Dr. Kevin Washington, Dr. Charles Willie, Dr. Kevin Johnson, Dr. Earl Holliday, Dr. E. Timothy Moore, Mrs. Patricia Payne, Dr. Alan Colon, Dr. Andrew Griffin, Dr. James Moore, and Dr. Venita Kelley.
