The Institute of Urban Education to Host the CHASE BANK W.E.B. DuBois Talented Tenth STEM Education Academy
The Institute of Urban Education is sponsoring a two-week residential academy for rising eighth grade male. The Program will be held on the campus of Central State University. Students will experience economics, entrepreneurship, math, science, engineering, and technology concepts in addition to learning “how to learn” study skills. During the Talented Tenth programs, the young men will experience one to one and group time with a cadre of educational professionals, paraprofessionals, and Central State college students. The young men and women will be given support that ranges from educational to socio-emotional. Participants will be challenged daily with recreational, as well as rigorous physical activity. Etiquette training (complete with banquet) and dialogues about media portrayals of men and women and violence, self-discipline, and leadership will be part of the academy curriculum. The program makes several off campus trips.
Our specific goals for the young men are to learn:
- Self and physical awareness including sex education
- Learning “How to learn” skills
- Adolescent Psychology
- How to acquire subject matter knowledge
- Historical role models: study African math, science, and engineering giants
Parents must provide all transportation to and from the academy. Field trip transportation will be provided by the academy.
