Central State Universtiy Know More Learning System
The Know More Program at Central State University (CSU), a Historically Black University in Ohio, is a holistic intervention designed to assist students pass the Praxis II teacher examination. The program was developed to address a critical shortage of minority students in Ohio going into education. In 2003, less than one-third of students at CSU who took the state examination passed, one of the lowest pass rates in the United States. The Know More Program, developed under the direction of the Dean, Dr. Kaye Jeter and with the faculty at CSU, provides students with a strong foundation in learning processes intended to support them in their future studies and future work. It addresses not only the academic sources of poor test performance, but the social and emotional sources as well. The seven components of Know More are cooperative learning, study skills, organization, test anxiety, text content, test immersion, and peer and faculty mentoring.
Know More is a six-day, seven-part intervention providing a nurturing, culturally rich experience that stresses collaboration, verbal interaction and modeling. The program involves 20 to 30 junior and senior level African American students and 8 peer and faculty facilitators. Know More has just completed its fourth cohort of students WITH passing rates on the state PRAXIS exam ranging from 75 to 100%.
