About the Program
The Academic Program
Environmental engineering is a thriving field that is expected to grow in the future tremendously. This demand could be attributed to the fact that there are about 200,000 contaminated sites in the U.S. that require cleanup costing $187 Billion. The water infrastructure work is expected to be about $120 Billion over the next 15 years. The program is designed to address the various needs and demands of the environmental engineering industry through emphasizing the fundamentals. A summer internship is a requirement of the program and typically the department in collaboration with Career Services of the University finds paid internship during the summer periods.
The B. S. in Environmental Engineering (ENE) grew from the water resources management program at CSU and is designed to prepare students in the engineering aspects of sustaining proper environment related to air, water and solid waste necessary for public health. The program requires learning mathematics, physics, chemistry and microbiology in early years for advanced courses during junior and senior years. Basic engineering science component of the curriculum will be offered through the Manufacturing Engineering (MFE) Department of the University and at the Center. The ENE curriculum at Central State University is unique with courses in water treatment, wastewater treatment, air quality engineering, and soil and water pollution, environmental policy and in many other related aspects of environmental engineering. The program also incorporates advanced technology tools such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing.
Careers in Environmental Engineering
The program prepares students to become planning/ design/ construction/ engineers in consulting firms, state and Federal agencies, city governments; system operational professionals in water/ wastewater/ solid waste functions in cities. Upon joining a firm or an agency, the graduates is expected to have advancing careers culminating in visible managerial positions. Environmental engineering is ideally suited for students with a strong sense of concern for a healthy environment across various sections of the populace nationally and internationally.
