About The Department
Program Objectives | Career Opportunities | Additional Remarks & Information
The
four-year BS degree program in Manufacturing Engineering (MFE) is
one of few such programs in the nation which are dedicated
to undergraduate manufacturing engineering education, and which
are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the
Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET).
The overall Manufacturing engineering curriculum consists of major components of mathematics (through differential equations and calculus III), basic sciences, engineering sciences, humanities & fine arts, and social & behavioral sciences, together with the engineering major requirements that can be grouped into the following topic areas:
- Materials and Manufacturing Processes
- Process Assembly and Product Engineering
- Manufacturing Productivity and Quality
- Manufacturing Integration Methods & Systems Design
Throughout the curriculum, emphasis is given to the engineering design function and computer applications.
Program Objectives .:. Back to Top
The mission of the Manufacturing Engineering Department has been formally defined as follows:
“The Manufacturing Engineering Department provides a quality education to a diverse student population who will be empowered to develop their full potential as engineers, leaders and citizens of a global society. The program provides the opportunity to demonstrate and apply knowledge successfully to meet engineering challenges, function competently in multidisciplinary teams, communicate clearly and effectively, listen keenly, and understand professional, legal and ethical responsibility. Graduates are enabled to contribute to the enhancement of the quality of life and wealth of society, their community, the manufacturing industry, and themselves, through full participation and leadership in the manufacturing enterprise.”
The Manufacturing Engineering Department at Central State University is dedicated to preparing students for manufacturing engineering careers in diverse manufacturing enterprises. The following program educational objectives have been developed to address the local, state, and national opportunities or needs:
- Develop MFE graduates with a thorough understanding of engineering principles
- Provide comprehensive preparation for careers in manufacturing
- Introduce graduates to research methods and experiences
- Empower individuals from underserved populations to contribute leadership and service to society
- Instill in graduates the University’s core values of honesty, hard work, caring and excellence.
Program Outcomes
To achieve the MFE program objectives, the Manufacturing Engineering Department has designed a curriculum and developed strategies that measurably achieve the following student academic outcomes:
- An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering
- An ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data.
- An ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs subject to constraints.
- An ability to function on multi-disciplinary teams.
- An ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems.
- An understanding of professional and ethical responsibility.
- An ability to think, listen and communicate effectively.
- An understanding of the impact of engineering solutions in a global and societal context.
- A recognition of the need for, and ability to engage in life-long learning.
- A knowledge of contemporary issues.
- An ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.
Additionally, our students are prepared for career success by demonstrating they have proficiency in:
- Proficiency in materials and manufacturing processes: understanding the behavior and properties of materials as they are altered and influenced by processing in manufacturing.
- Proficiency in process, assembly and product engineering: understanding the design of products and the equipment, tooling and environment necessary for their manufacture.
- Proficiency in manufacturing competitiveness: understanding the creation of competitive advantage through manufacturing planning, strategy and control.
- Proficiency in manufacturing systems design: understanding the analysis, synthesis and control of manufacturing operations using statistical and calculus based methods, simulation and information technology.
- Proficiency in laboratory practices: graduates must be able to measure manufacturing process variables in a manufacturing laboratory and make technical inferences about the process.

Career Opportunities .:. Back to Top
Graduates of the Manufacturing Engineering program are highly sought by prestigious firms and graduate programs. They have found challenging positions in production planning and management, quality assurance, product and process engineering/design improvement, manufacturing supplier training, facilities design, etc.
Some of the positions involve exciting international assignments in Japan, Korea, China, Mexico, and Canada. Employers include major corporations such as Caterpillar, Harley-Davidson, Goodyear, Kraft Food, Frito-Lay, Boeing, Proctor & Gamble and Duracell. Other graduates who have elected to pursue graduate engineering studies have received fellowships from prestigious universities such as MIT, Princeton, Michigan State, Rensselaer Polytech, Virginia Tech, University of Cincinnati, Howard University, University of Dayton, Wayne State and Wisconsin.
Additional Remarks & Information .:. Back to Top
Central State University offers a variety of financial aid packages and scholarships. Students may either commute or live in the residence halls on campus. Students have the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities such as varsity and intramural sports, student government, student professional societies, fraternities and sororities, and Army ROTC.
The metropolitan conveniences of Cincinnati, Dayton and Columbus lie within 55 miles of the rural campus setting; pleasant recreational areas are nearby (one of the nation's finest bike path networks lies near the campus). CSU students enjoy strong support from the CSU alumni association and its successful and dedicated members who are spread across the entire United States.
