Department of Manufacturing Engineering

About The Department

#The four-year BS degree program in Manufacturing Engineering (MFE) is one of only seventeen such programs in the nation which are dedicated to undergraduate manufacturing engineering education, and which are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET).

The overall Manufacturing engineering curriculum consists of major components of mathematics (through differential equations and calculus III), basic sciences, engineering sciences, humanities & fine arts, and social & behavioral sciences, together with the engineering major requirements that can be grouped into the following topic areas:

  • Materials and Manufacturing Processes
  • Process Assembly and Product Engineering
  • Manufacturing Productivity and Quality
  • Manufacturing Integration Methods & Systems Design

Throughout the curriculum, emphasis is given to the engineering design function and computer applications.

Program Objectives

The mission of the Manufacturing Engineering Department has been formally defined as follows:

“To provide an excellent manufacturing engineering education to a diverse student population motivated to rise to help advance the quality and wealth of society, their community, the manufacturing industry, and themselves through full participation and leadership in the manufacturing enterprise.”

Accordingly, the overarching goal of the program is to produce engineers who are well prepared for any of the following career challenges:

  • contribute to the engineering planning and management of a relatively large, or small modern manufacturing operation;
  • introduce modern manufacturing methods and design technologies into a small manufacturing operation;
  • assist in the start-up of a new manufacturing enterprise;
  • maintain a process of life-long learning to retain technical competence, including earning graduate degrees in engineering or related management studies, and obtaining relevant professional certification.

To prepare students for these challenges and opportunities, the curriculum has been designed to provide the following specific competencies:

  • an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science and engineeringan ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret dataan ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needsan ability to function on multidisciplinary teamsan ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problemsan understanding of professional and ethical responsibilityan ability to think, listen and communicate effectivelyan understanding of the impact of engineering solutions in a global and societal contexta recognition of the need for, and ability to engage in life-long learninga knowledge of contemporary issues

  • an ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tolls necessary for engineering practice

Special MFE Advantages

  • A strong network with coporations, government research agencies and graduate schools to promote internships and permanent placement opportunities for students.

  • An active and sophisticated research program to provide practical experience for students, and opportunities to earn part-time income.

  • State-of-the-art laboratory resources, including an integrated manufacturing cell, to support research and instruction.

  • A highly experienced and active Industrial Advisory Committee (IAC).

  • Frequent guest lectures by experienced engineers and managers and periodic field trips to area plants.

  • Student chapters of the Society of manufacturing Engineers (SME) and the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) promote professional networking and student technical and leadership skills.

  • Active membership in several major techincal consortia help the Department keep abreast of ongoing advances in technology.

  • Six of the seven full-time faculty members hold doctoral degrees. Five of the faculty are licensed professional enginners, and all have extensive research experience.

  • A fulltime engineering laboratory technician is available to assist in student laboratory exercises and design projects.

  • Typically, classes at the junior and senior levels currently range from 10 to 12 students. The healthy student faculty ration is approzimately 11 to 1.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the Manufacturing Engineering program are highly sought by prestigious firms and graduate programs. They have found challenging positions in production planning and management, quality assurance, product and process design/improvement, manufacturing supplier training, facilities design, etc.

Some of the positions involve exciting international assignments in Japan, Korea, China, Mexico, and Canada. Employers include major corporations such as Goodyear, Kraft Food, Frito-Lay and Duracell. Other graduates who have elected to pursue graduate engineering studies have received fellowships from prestigious universities such as MIT, Michigan State, Rensselaer, Virginia Tech, University of Cincinnati, Howard University, University of Dayton, Wayne State and Wisconsin.

Additional Remarks & Information

Central State University offers a variety of financial aid packages and scholarships. Students may either commute or live in the residence halls on campus. Students have the opportunity to partiicpate in extracurricular activites such as varsity and intramural sports, student government, student professional societies, fraternities and sororities, and Army ROTC.

The metropolitan conveniences of Cincinnati, Dayton and Columbus lie within 55 miles of the rual campus setting; pleasant recreational areas are nearby (one of the nation's finest bike path networks lies near the campus). CSU students enjoy strong suport from the CSU alumni association and its successful and dedicated members who are spread across the entire United States.
