ART 190. Introduction to Art Education (III; 3) This course gives an orientation to teaching art in the public schools. It is required of all art education certification majors during the first year of their program. This course includes the opportunity for the perspective teachers to become familiar with the unique role the arts play in the early development and experiences of the young learner. Observation required.
ART 290. Art for the Teacher (II; 3) This course consists of the study of materials and methods and procedures in teaching art in the elementary schools. Special attention is given to the selection and organization of materials, lesson plans, promotion of children's growth, and direction of creative art experiences. Prerequisite: 48 quarter hours of credit.
ART 291. Art Teaching in the Elementary School (III; 3) This workshoporiented course gives regular elementary classroom teachers new and practical ideas on the use of art materials and techniques. Public classroom involvement is a part of the course. Prerequisite: ART 190 or special permission.
ART 292. Art Teaching in the Secondary School (III; 3 Even Years) This workshop-oriented course gives regular school classroom teachers new and practical ideas on the use of art materials and techniques. There is involvement in the public classroom and observation is required. Prerequisite: ART 190 or special permisssion.
ART 293. Art for the Exceptional Child (I; 2) This course focuses on the therapeutic aspects of art education in working with the mentally and physically handicapped. The course is taught in conjunction with the Professional Education Department.
ART 294. Art for the Urban Child (I;2) This course explores concepts, theories, learning and evaluation techniques relative to art activities appropriate for the urban student during various stages of child development.
ART 392. Special Problems and School Display (I;3 Odd Years) This is a course designed for individual study of exhibition and display techniques as they relate to art education programs. Prerequisite: ART 290.
ART 493. Creative Art Teaching in Public Schools (III; 5) This course continues the exploration of materials and methods in art with an emphasis on teaching experiences. Additional concern will be given to developing proficiency in designing and writing lesson plans, classroom management, student needs and evaluation. Observation required. Prerequisite: ART 480.
