Music Mentors Program
**SPRING 2013 APPLICATIONS ARE NO LONGER BEING ACCEPTED
Applications for Fall 2013 will be accepted on the following terms:
CURRENT participants have from April 27 – May 4, 2013 to submit an application for the Fall 2013 session. Any applications received during this time period will be granted automatic resubmission into the program.
All other applicants may apply beginning at midnight on Sunday, May 5. Applications will be processed on a first come first serve basis.
Music Mentors provides free one-on-one music lessons, ensembles, and theory classes for anyone in the Miami Valley Community. Lessons, classes, and rehearsals are held on Central State’s main campus in Wilberforce, Ohio in the Paul Robeson Center for Music and the Performing Arts every Saturday. Lesson times are at the discretion of each teacher.
The run according to the academic year, beginning Saturday, August 24, 2013 and ending May 3, 2014. Lessons are offered in piano, bass, guitar, voice, and percussion. Additional classes in music theory and percussion ensemble are also available. We accept applications on a rolling basis.
Each student will learn:
- fundamental music theory
- how to read music
- repertoire according to each student’s skill level
Music Mentors Program Policy:
- The student must have an instrument at home on which to practice
- The student must attend ALL lessons. One no call no show and/or two unexcused absences are allowed. If either is exceeded, the student is asked to relinquish his or her spot in the program.
The Program Director of Music Mentors is Dr. Jennifer Cruz, Associate Professor of Piano and Music Theory at Central State University. She received her Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral Degrees from Indiana University-South Bend, Manhattan School of Music, and University of Cincinnati-College Conservatory of Music, respectively. She has worked with the Boys Choir of Harlem School and taught at the University of Cincinnati and Xavier University. She has played on the international stage including recitals in Israel, the Czech Republic, Guam, Italy, Serbia, and in many cities in the United States. Her goal for the program is to provide free music instruction to empower the community and instill basic skills that can aid students in their academic growth.
