Assistant Professor of Music / Faculty Accompanist

Dr. Sun Hee Kim is a collaborative pianist and vocal coach. She is acclaimed for her outstanding musicality and sensitive accompaniment. Grounded in a deep understanding of music, her elegant phrasing, delicate touch and powerful dramatic flair create evocative sound-landscapes in which her sensitive collaboration finds expression. Her philosophy for collaborating with vocalists and instrumentalists is to provide careful attention and constant support in an effort to maximize the performer’s full potential. In practice, this philosophy inspires the most positive cooperation results and continuously earns her a reputation among collaborators as a “tower of strength.”

Dr. Kim performed solo and collaborative recitals throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. Featured performances include recitals with a violist Rudolf Haken and a mezzo-soprano Melissa Davis. Dr. Kim also collaborated with professional singers such as Ollie Watts Davis, Yvonne Redman, Jerold Siena, Kearstin Piper Brown, and Ryan Milstead. Additionally, she has served on the music staff at numerous festivals, including the Opera Theatre and Music Festival of Lucca (Italy) as well as the Gyongju Summer Music Camp (Korea). Her musical background ranges from art song, choral music, opera and musical theatre, to string, wind, brass accompanying and chamber music. Her specialties include German Lieder, French mélodies, and African- American spirituals.

Dr. Kim is currently an Assistant Professor of Music at Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio. In her faculty appointment, she works with singers, instrumentalists, and the world-renowned CSU chorus. She received her Doctor of Musical Arts degree (Vocal Coaching and Accompanying) from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2013. Her research focused on song accompaniment and its related effects on British art songs. She completed a Master of Music degree (Collaborative Piano) at the College- Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati, as well as a Bachelors degree (Piano Performance) at Sang Myung University in Korea. She lives in Xenia with her husband and a lovely daughter.
