The highly acclaimed Central State University Chorus, under the direction of Professor Jeremy Winston, has a repertoire encompassing all periods and styles, including spirituals of African Americans, gospel, and jazz.
Recent performance highlights within the include a recent tour to Medellin, Colombia and a performance with the EAFIT Symphony Orchestra. Performing works by Gershwin and arrangements by Professor Winston, The Central State University Chorus presented the best of American music in a region that has heard little of the HBCU Chorus. Other recent highlights include a performance at the Congressional Black Caucus’s Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C. in September and a highly acclaimed performance for the Governor of Ohio, John Kasich’s inauguration. In 2013, The Chorus performed at The White House for their annual holiday celebration at the invitation of First Lady Michelle Obama. The Chorus also performed in the rotunda of the United State Senate’s Russell Building in 2013 and returned for an encore performance in March of 2014.
The Chorus received outstanding international acclaim in June of 2014 on a month‐ long tour of Europe. The Chorus left filled‐to‐capacity concert halls in an ecstatic uproar after every concert. The Chorus performed in over a dozen major metropolitan cities including Madrid, Barcelona, and Valencia, Spain; Prague, Czech Republic; Durbach, Germany; and Straussburg, France. The Chorus concluded the tour with a performance in Prague’s historic Obecní dům [O‐bets‐nee doom] concert hall with the world renown Czech National Symphony Orchestra for their summer Proms Concert series.
In 1993, the Chorus performed with the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, resulting in the Telarc International CD, A Gospel Celebration, Amen. The disk was nominated for a Grammy Award and also featured Jennifer Holliday, Maureen McGovern, and Lou Rawls. The Chorus was featured on Blue Monday and Porgy and Bess for Telarc and The Cincinnati Pops.
The singers play a very active role in campus events as goodwill artists and performance ambassadors in a wide variety of settings including conventions, banquets, and convocations. The Central State Chorus and its members play a vital role in life of the local musical community. Its members regularly perform with local professional organizations such as The Dayton Opera, The Dayton Philharmonic, The Cleveland Orchestra, and The Bach Society of Dayton. In 2010, the Chorus and its members were featured in the 75th anniversary season of The Dayton Opera Company’s production of Porgy and Bess.
In addition to international tours The Chorus presents annual tours in various regions around the country. Tour highlights from 2014 include visits to Philadelphia, PA; Washington, DC; Baltimore, MD; New York, NY; and Pittsburgh, PA.
