Lisa M. Peterson ’87

Lisa M. Peterson is a distinguished educational administrator, who is the Principal of Cox Elementary in the Xenia Community Schools district.

Ms. Peterson is an Ohio native who graduated from Central State University in 1987 with a B.S. Degree in Elementary Education. She continued her education at the University of Dayton in 1999, earning a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership and Educational and Allied Profession. Ms. Peterson’s passion for education led her to obtain a Principal Licensure at the University of Dayton in 2006.

Ms. Peterson has spent most of her teaching career in Xenia Community Schools. As Principal, she has taken an active role on several committees. She works with the District Leadership Team; participated in The School Improvement Plan; The Principal’s Leadership Academy; and served on the New Building Design Committee. Ms. Peterson is an active member of the LPDC (Local Professional Development Committee) for Xenia Community Schools. She is most fond of her Positive Behavior Support Program called Cox Shining Stars, “Where Every Child is a Shining Star.” The program is in its 10th year and is very successful because it encourages students to model positive attitudes and behavior within and outside of the school setting. Since the start of the program, numerous students have been recognized for their outstanding character traits.

Ms. Peterson has worked with the Ohio Department of Education, Offices of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment, to develop bias-free, age appropriate and content appropriate items for all state assessments. While serving on this committee, Ms. Peterson helped develop the Ohio Grades 3-8 Achievement Tests.

Her support of Central State’s student teachers is strong. She knows all too well the importance of a sequentially-designed, performance-based experience for all prospective educators. Students seeking onsite practices are welcomed into her building and are provided a global experience to practice and develop their teaching skills in a classroom setting.

Ms. Peterson is an active member of Greater Grace Temple in Springfield, Ohio. She has been facilitating Life Group discussions for women that empower them to meet everyday life challenges head on with dignity and faith through Biblical lessons. Additionally, Ms. Peterson serves the community as both a member and Vice President of the Wilberforce (OH) Chapter of the Links, Incorporated.

Ms. Peterson has been recognized for many of her accomplishments. She was honored at the 2016 Xenia Area Women in Business Luncheon for her exemplary work with students and teachers. Ms. Peterson was awarded the 2013 Dollar General Donation of $40K for the Cox Literacy Program. Recently, Ms. Peterson was recognized by the Wilberforce Chapter of The MOLES and National Body for her outstanding leadership abilities, dedication, and enduring service as an educator.

Ms. Peterson currently resides in Springfield, Ohio. She is grateful for the life that hard work and high expectations has afforded her and she continues to serve as a role model for future generations.
